Reducing drinking water use without overhauling your process

Reducing drinking water use without overhauling your process

Many companies think of water savings as something that requires major changes:

New machines, different cleaning systems, or even a complete redesign of the production process.
But did you know that with RSS surface coating technology, you can often achieve significant savings, without major investments or process changes?

A smart upgrade to your existing line can already result in a substantial reduction in rinsing and cleaning water, offering a structural contribution to the 20% reduction target.

Why coating technology?

In food production, many raw materials, end products, or residual streams tend to stick to surfaces: pipelines, gutters, bins, conveyors, or filling systems. For example:

  • Proteins that stick during wet processing
  • Fat residues that build up in gutters, pipes, or machine exteriors
  • Dough residues on stamping tools or conveyor belts

These residues lead to extra water usage during cleaning: more rinsing, higher water pressure, longer downtime, often without real gains in cleaning efficiency.

The solution: a technical coating that prevents products from adhering too strongly. Less product buildup means less cleaning is needed.

How does it work in practice?

Our coating creates an invisible, food-safe protective layer that ensures:

  • Faster product release, reducing buildup and contamination
  • Shorter rinse cycles, requiring less water and fewer chemicals
  • Lower cleaning frequency, thanks to minimal adhesion

That means you don’t have to redesign your CIP system or switch to alternative water sources, you simply make your existing system more efficient.

Example:

At a customer in the bakery sector, the application of our coating on conveyor belts and inside a butter pump resulted in a 30% reduction in rinse water, without any changes to the production process.

What does this mean for your ESG or CSRD goals?

Water savings are a key component of the “Environmental” pillar in your ESG strategy.
And under the new CSRD (Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive), companies are required to report on:

  • Water consumption and reduction
  • Measures taken to prevent waste
  • Risks related to water shortages
  • Progress toward national targets (such as -20% by 2035)

A coating solution is a concrete, measurable action you can include in your reporting, with data to support it through testing and monitoring.

Whitepaper: ESG & CSRD explained

Specifically for food producers, we’ve written a whitepaper explaining the link between water reduction, ESG strategies, and CSRD reporting. You’ll learn:

  • What you’re required to report on
  • Why water plays a key role
  • And how technical solutions like our coating fit into that picture
